2009 Ford Flex Water Leaking Through Sunroof | CarComplaints.com

I’ve been noticing an intermittent, unpleasant odor for a couple of months in our 2009 Ford Flex – just thought it was from some things the boys left in the vehicle? After an overnight rain couple of weeks ago, though, I got sloshed by water on my pants from a large drip at the driver side windshield pillar (A-pillar) at the top of the molding where it meets the headliner. Finally did a number of online searches today and it appears to be a noted problem on a number of forums, but mostly at:

  • The passenger side A pillar,
  • Coming through the air vents in the ceiling next to the rear DVD player, or
  • Clogged drain lines at rear hatch door.

The post below, though, describes my situation exactly:

I got to checking things this morning. Apparently, there is a leak at the sunroof seal that lets water seep into the plastic forms within the headliner base at the front of the sunroof. Also noticed that the three velcro pieces that hold the headliner up to the roof are loose and under a lot of strain (i.e., won’t stay in place even after reattachment…) Here’s a link to some photos of the problem to make it easier to understand what I’m talking about.

Here’s a link to a Ford schematic for the sunroof, which shows the drain lines. Still looking to find the drain holes in the basin/trough, though, to run some guitar string / piano wire into for unclogging…

I’ll contact the dealer this week to see what the fix is. Being out of warranty, I’m sure it will be expensive. Hopefully, they’ll have a description of what to do so that I can take care of it myself. Might post a follow-up if anything good to share.
